Why Sugar Brew

Eight reasons distillers are building their RTDs on sugar brew.

Sugar brew gives formulators a blank canvas: nothing to mask, nothing to fight, and a tax-and-channel profile that opens shelf space spirits can't always reach.

i.

Naturally Gluten-Free

Made from fermented sugar cane — no barley, no wheat, no corn protein crossover. Label it gluten-free with no asterisks.

ii.

Neutral & Colorless

Cane sugar ferments clean — no malt notes, no color, no off-flavors to hide. The truest blank canvas for fruit, botanical, or classic cocktail flavor builds.

iii.

Taxed as Beer

Classified federally as a malt-equivalent fermented beverage. That's a fraction of the excise burden of a distilled spirit — meaningful COGS impact at scale.

iv.

Wider Retail Access

Because it's classified like beer, finished RTDs made on a sugar brew base can be sold in grocery, convenience, and venues that don't carry distilled spirits.

v.

Lower Cost Base

Sugar brew is among the most cost-effective alcohol bases on the market — and Ultra Pure's global supply chain means you get our 20-year sourcing advantage.

vi.

On the Floor, Today

viii.

The RTD Opportunity

The hottest segment in beverage alcohol — and it’s still accelerating.

The U.S. ready-to-drink alcohol market hit roughly $27 billion in 2026 and is forecast to grow at a 14% CAGR. Spirit-based RTDs are growing even faster — over 20% annually — and most of them ride on a fermented cane sugar base.

Sugar brew is the unspoken foundation of the category.

  • U.S. RTD market: $27B in 2026, projected $38B+ by 2030
  • Spirit-based and premium RTDs growing 20%+ annually
  • Cans command 78% of the segment — sized for sugar-brew formats
  • Wider on-premise and grocery access vs. distilled-spirit RTDs

Sugar Brew vs. The Alternatives

Four bases. One blank canvas.

Every RTD starts with a base decision. Here's how sugar brew compares to the three other options most formulators consider.

Flavor profile Neutral, clean Slight malt/grain notes Fruit-forward Spirit-defining
Color Colorless Slight color Carries grape color Clear to amber

How It's Made

From cane field to your tank yard.

Sugar Brew is produced through a carefully controlled fermentation process — no distillation step, no grain mash. The result is a clean fermented base ready to flavor, carbonate, and can.

01

Source

Refined cane sugar from our globally vetted suppliers — Non-GMO certified options available.

02

Dissolve

Sugar is dissolved in water to produce the wort. No malt extraction, no boiling rig.

03

Ferment

Specialized yeast strains convert sugar to ethanol in closed vessels at 70-85°F.

04

Clarify

The fermented base is clarified and polished to remove yeast and residual solids.

05

Ship

Quality-tested and shipped from Ultra Pure's nine U.S. bonded warehouses.

Applications

Built for the formats flying off shelves.

Sugar Brew's neutral profile makes it the workhorse base across every fast-growing RTD format.

Hard Seltzers

Crisp, clean, sessionable.

The category that built sugar brew's reputation. Bright fruit flavors, gluten-free claim, and low-calorie positioning — all on a neutral cane base.

Canned Cocktails

Classics, ready for the shelf.

Margaritas, mules, palomas, mojitos — sugar brew lets you build the flavor profile without distilled-spirit excise taxes or licensing friction.

Hard Tea & Lemonades

Brew it, blend it, can it.

The neutrality of sugar brew lets brewed tea and real lemonade lead the flavor — without grain interference muddying the profile.

Botanical & Spritzers

Where the botanicals shine.

Elderflower, hibiscus, cucumber, basil — herbal and floral notes hit clean on a sugar brew base. No malt sweetness fighting your formulation.

Functional & Better-For-You

Clean label, by design.

Adaptogens, electrolytes, real fruit juice, low-sugar formulations — a neutral cane base supports the wellness positioning of the next-gen RTD.

Custom & Contract

Your formula, our base.

Common Questions

Things distillers ask us before their first order.

What exactly is "sugar brew"?

Sugar brew is the industry's shorthand for a fermented sugar cane alcohol base. Unlike a distilled spirit, it isn't distilled after fermentation — it's clarified and polished, then shipped to RTD producers who flavor, dilute, carbonate, and can it. It's sometimes called "sugar beer" because it's federally taxed like beer.

How is it different from a Grain Neutral Spirit (GNS)?

GNS is distilled to 190+ proof, classified federally as a distilled spirit, and taxed accordingly. Sugar brew is a much lower-ABV fermented product (~15%) that has not been distilled, so it falls under the beer/FMB federal tax class — a substantially lower per-gallon excise tax. Both are neutral; the difference is regulatory, financial, and channel-strategic.

Will my finished RTD really be gluten-free?

If you build entirely on a sugar brew base and don't introduce gluten through flavorings, your finished product is naturally gluten-free. Sugar brew is made from cane sugar with no barley, wheat, or rye involvement — there is no gluten in the starting material.

Can I sell my sugar-brew RTD in grocery and convenience?

In most U.S. states, yes — because it's classified like a malt beverage at the federal level, sugar-brew RTDs often qualify for beer-channel distribution. State classifications vary, however, so a few states will treat the finished product like a spirit. We'll happily walk you through your target distribution markets.

What does the lead time look like?

Stock totes typically ship within a week of order confirmation from the closest of our nine U.S. bonded warehouses. Tanker quantities are special order with lead times we'll confirm at quote.

Do you offer formulation support?

Yes — through Ultra Pure's broader beverage services. We can connect you with flavor houses, formulators, and contract bottlers in our partner network. We'll also help you spec the base for your finished ABV target.

How do I order a sample?
